    This meeting was postponed on the 12th due to the snow, cold, and wind causing treacherous side roads.  It is now set for Tuesday, February 26th, at 7 pm at the Stockton Public Library.

    The Northwest Illinois Forestry Association will host Forestry Consultant John Schroeder for its Tuesday, February 26th, 7:00 pm meeting at the Stockton Public Library, 140 W Benton, Stockton.   Mr. Schroeder has a Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry from Colorado State University.  While attending the University, he participated in forest projects for the State of Colorado, the Federal government, and Boy Scouts of America.  Post graduation, Mr. Schroeder became involved with timber sale preparation and forest management in Northern California.  He will speak on his experiences there, including his proximity to the devastating 2018 wildfires.  He will also talk about his new position as dedicated Forest Manager for New Melleray Abbey’s timberlands near Peosta, IA.  

    There will be a brief NIFA business meeting to finalize the 2019 agenda before Mr. Schroeder’s presentation.   The public is welcome to attend and learn more about forestry in northwestern Illinois.  A special invitation is extended to young people interested in forestry and the opportunities it can provide in our area and throughout the nation.  More information about NIFA can be found at www.nifatrees.org.

    The Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference has been cancelled for this year.  Next year's conference is planned for March 14, 2020.


    The cancellation was not due to lack of interest but due to personnel changes at Iowa State Extension.

    The NIFA Annual Dinner Meeting will be held at the Church of God in Mt. Carroll.  The featured speaker, IDNR District Forester Steve Felt, will discuss forest soils and selecting the best tree species for planting based on soil types and site characteristics.  


    Steve holds a degree in forestry with a minor in soil science from the University of Illinois and has served as district forester for 37 years.  Previously, he was the Henry County soil scientist working with SCS to complete the county’s soil survey.  In addition, he has served as president of the International Walnut Council which promotes cultivation of fine hardwoods, as well as founding member and secretary of the Walnut Council’s Illinois chapter.  The Walnut Council has recognized his outstanding efforts to educate woodland owners.  He was also the state coordinator for the American Chestnut Foundation, and was recently elected chairman of the Illinois Tree Farm Committee.  He travels extensively throughout the state and the country on his own time to promote forest management and the successful propagation of fine hardwood timber.  For recreation, he enjoys planting trees like the 38,000 hardwoods he planted on his property along the Green River in Henry County.


    You do not have to be a member to attend.  Fee for the dinner and program is 

    • $12 with a reservation or 
    • $15 without a reservation
    • payable at the door.  
    • reservations close on March 18th so that we can provide an accurate count for the caterer.

    The March 26th dinner will begin at 7 pm followed by the evening's program.
    The Church of God is located at 816 S. Clay Street, Mount Carroll, Illinois.  Clay Street is Route 78 and the Church is just north of Route 52/64 on the east side of Clay.

    • Arnold Farm, Jo Daviess County

    NIFA will visit the Arnold Farm on Saturday, April 20th, to view and discuss the effects and regeneration following previous timber harvests at several sites over the past few years.  Attendees will be able to see renewal of the forest as seedlings and saplings are replacing the removed trees.  Consulting Forester Kevin Oetken, who managed the timber harvests, will be present to comment and answer questions.


    The Arnold Farm is located at 997 N. Salem Road, north of Elizabeth, Illinois.  Attendees should have sturdy footwear and be prepared to walk up and down a few hills.

    NIFA will visit the forestry and sawmill/kiln operation of Johnson Creek Hardwoods on Saturday, September 21st, from 1 to 4 pm.    Further details will be posted closer to this date.


    Johnson Creek Hardwoods is located at 6480 Daggert Road, south of Mount Carroll.


    This free event will be open to the public.
